  • My beloved son, Luke Putnam, shared your news with me. During 44 years of trusting in Christ and watching Him work in the lives of those who love Him, I have seen humanly impossible outcomes prevail time after time. May all of us who will be praying for you remember to plead with our loving Father that He intervene moment-by-moment to help you both through what will be a tough path. Let us all be grateful for every breath He gives us and for the opportunity to share with others the love He has shown to us. You have already done so in the first entry of Your Story.

  • I’m friends with your in-laws. You have been in my prayers. I have faith in your recovery. I feel that it’s a journey that God is sending you on to help you better understand YOUR future patients. He works in mysterious ways. My priest and nun friends also have you on their prayer lists.

I look forward to meeting you and your husband once your health is 100%.

    All my best,
    Claudia Vasquez

Our time together in the OR at UCI only overlapped by a few weeks, but you were instantly one of my favorite colleagues. Your smile and beaming eyes would always brighten my day. I was devastated to hear the news of your illness, but I know if anyone can persevere and beat this, it is you. You are in my thoughts and know that your UCI family is in this with you.

    All the best,

  • Checking in. Hear from Ashton’s dad the latest, plus read this blog. Want you to know that I pray for you daily. At weekly mass I ask God to ease your pain, and give you & Ashton strength. I ask Virgin Mary to give your mothers courage. When my own daughter had a health scare, I ask Mary to give me her strength to help my daughter. I look forward to meeting you, and holding your hand in prayer.

    God be with you!

  • Dear Grace & Ashton, you don’t know me but I know your Mother-in-law & Mom – Jayme. Several people in my office have been praying for you and your family since we were made aware of the situation. My church is also praying for you. Our God is a healer, He says so in His Word. Jesus who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes YE WERE HEALED. 1 Peter 2:24 KJV – this is just another opportunity to give God glory for His wonderous working power! We are believing for LIFE with you! Pray for each other. Do this so that God can heal you. Anyone who lives the way God wants can pray, and great things will happen. James 5:16 ERV

  • Hey guys – just caught up on your news. Very happy to hear Grace is mobile again (I want Instagrams of you two trekking in the Irvine hills). Fingers are crossed that one of the trials will work out; would rather you stay here, if possible. 🙂 Sending you my love. You are always in my thoughts.

  • You are both always in our prayers. We are so encouraged by the most recent update. I know you will beat this. Please reach outif there’s anything either of you need. .. and we would love to join you if you’re looking for hiking company.

  • Grace, even though we’ve only worked together a few times, your presence is missed! I happened to ask about you today and was told your story. Sending lots of prayers, positivity and strength your way, keep fighting!

  • It was my absolute pleasure to (perhaps illegally) get you those Lord of the Rings special edition movies, and Aaron showed me the USB holder and it looks sick. I hope these movies bring you joy, strength and inspiration in your fight against cancer.

  • Dearest Grace,

I ran into Julia the other day and she told me the news and I could not believe it. I assumed you were crushing your anesthesia years like you crushed team 4! I am praying for you and your family. If there is anything I can do to help let me know. Julia and I agree that once you recover we are going to go back to Medieval Times to celebrate (Ben can come too)! In the meantime if you do feel up to it I would love to catch up with you. I wanted to tell you that since we met you have inspired me. While we were on team 4 together I used to think to myself… If Grace can do it then I can do it. You always looked so beautiful every morning and you worked so hard every day with a huge smile on your face. You kept up with your workouts and you ate healthy. Honestly, I haven’t met someone with such talent and brilliance so early in their training. You are an amazing woman and you can do this! We are all here for you and we love you.

  • Thinking about you two. So very happy I got to spend time with you in December and hope we can do it again. With Abro coming back to SoCal, we need to have a reunion in the near future. Keeping you in my heart.

  • Grace,

This is going to sound extraordinary, but after I tell you our story (short version) you will see where I am coming from (this is still going to be a long note). I just met your in-laws at Cheesecake Factory, Temecula, today, 18 February 2019. We are from Murrieta. We got to talking and UCI was brought up. My cousin, David Zamarano, MD was Resident Trauma Surgeon at UCI for years (he just left to Idaho), but in 2009, he diagnosed my 19 year old son, Richard Loo, with Ewing’s Sarcoma of S1/S2 coccyx tailbone, sacrum and right pelvis. All his treatment was done at UCI. They basically gave him two months to live. He endured 17 cycles of 7-day, in hospital infusions, never went more than a month without treatment, 100’s of bags of blood and platelets in infusion center, 37 days of radiation and stem cell harvesting (that was at CHOC). I was fervently faithful that he would beat this even though the odds were stacked against him. He is now 9 years in remission. So many miraculous things happened to me (as caregiver) and him, as a patient. But I can only tell you my story as his and mine are totally different. I just want to assure you that if there is fight within you, don’t give up. Statistics mean nothing when you have faith and hope on your side, I was never overly religious, always faithful, but when that faith was tested, it just drew me closer to God through prayer and through those miraculous events (that I will have to share with you another time), and it made me all together a stronger believer, still in my own way but my personal relationship with God just increased exponentially. I still never prayed for frivolous stuff but for small little miracles daily. Through my son’s experience, when I pray now, I pray generically for everyone – that they see God’s gifts no matter how they appear and more important, when specific prayer is required, as in your situation, I actually have a prayer book with written names of people who crossed our path and needed God’s assurances daily for the smallest of requests, i.e. to hold food down, to find good veins, for no neutropenic fever, etc… I gave your mother in law two prayer tokens, which someone did for me. In return, I purchase them now and hand them out when the time is right. The time was right today. I am continually amazed at how God connects people in the most unsuspecting ways but I truly believe he put me in your path to tell our story and advise that there is indeed hope to overcome this season – of cancer. You are on the top of my prayer list (and that list is real). I pray you find additional hope and inspiration of stories people share and that you are not alone in your fight. Fight the good fight! I hope to meet you one day. There is a book I want to recommend for your hubby, When I Lay My Isaac Down by Carol Kent. I too, gave my son up to God and said, I give him to you, take him and make him whole in Your Kingdom. He gave him back. It was then that I knew he had a chance. Science helps, of course also, and with Dr. Sender his primary oncologist (who is a miracle worker). God Bless You, Grace. I am a prayer warrior and am starting a chain on your behalf. If you ever want to reach out, I will be here for you.

    Love, Stephanie Gulick

  • Hello to you both. It’s middle 80 s here today. Not to long I go into surgery for hand. I continue to pray for the two of you!! Pray and I pray hard dailey for your treatments to work. I love you both and can’t wait to see you again ?❤️?

  • Your story, your faith, your strength , your thoughtfulness just amazes me. Ashton I have known you for most of your life, you were always determined, focused and driven, it comes as no surprise that in your role as a husband who happens to be a DR, you remain the same. Focused on your wife and a path to keep her comfortable, loved, and determined to get her back to health, continue to cherish the moments where Grace and you get time to hike, laugh, vacation and love together. In my mind I see you throwing off that catchers mask and saying what’s next I am here !! … Love you both …

  • Grace,

I am unbelievably sorry to hear of this news. Words cannot express how much I am sending you and Ashton unbelievable love during this time. I am praying for you.

Seeing you at Melody’s engagement party and wedding was absolutely lovely. I have so much respect for you as a person, wife, sorority sister, and medical professional. Corey and I recall having so much fun talking with you and Ashton at the engagement party. I am sorry that I did not know what you were going through until the wedding.

You have accomplished so much and are such a light – I have so many positive images in my mind of you taking charge at USC, kicking ass, shedding light, being a leader and role model to so many of us.

The last two years I have interviewed and spoken with many women in their 20s and 30s with cancer. And yet I still have very few words to express how sorry I am to hear of this news. You are not alone in your battle. It’s extremely unfair that you or anyone your age should have to face this.

You are an incredible person to share this publicly and for what it’s worth you absolutely inspire me. I I appreciate you. I respect you. And I send love and I pray for you.

Of course, please feel no need to respond to this message during this time. I will continue to follow your journey via your blog and Melody. I hope you find peace today and each day moving forward.

I have found this book helpful during dark times – there is no political agenda being pushed or any distinct message other than taking each day one day at a time, in case it is of interest. The Power of Now.

    I am praying for you.

    All my love,
    Chelsea Cymrot

  • Praying for you, Grace. Sending lots of good thoughts and energy to help you overcome this beast and come out stronger at the end. Miss you and look forward to seeing you soon!

  • Dear Grace,
I have only just learned about what’s going on in your life. I just want you to know that you are in my thoughts and my prayers and my heart from Chicago. I miss seeing you. I’m sending you all the love I have. <3 u and rooting for u.

  • Dear Grace,
I’m so unbelievably shocked and sorry to hear what you’ve been going through. Wanted to let you know that I’m rooting hard for you!!! Sending you all the love <3

  • Dear Grace,
Thank you for sharing your painful but profound journey with all of us. Your strength is such a inspiration. I wish you all the best and send you all my love.

  • Ashton and Grace,
You have inspired so many people through this difficult time. I was fortunate to be there in the beginning stages of your wonderful relationship. I know we all have been busy working towards our careers these past years but you have shown Gods love to us all and we are all very grateful for it. As a newly wed myself you have made my wife and I relationship stronger reading and following you on this journey. We love you both very much and will continue to pray every night.

  • It’s impossible to imagine how tough this last year has been for you both and your families, but it has been so inspiring to see the strength and courage with which you two have confronted every challenge thrown your way. The Feddema family loves and cares for you both so much, and you are constantly in our thoughts. No matter the outcome, you both have served as an incredible inspiration for countless others that have read about your journey. You have shown that it is possible to maintain a positive outlook and a heart full of love through even the darkest of times. That is a lesson that I know I will carry with me for the rest of my life thanks to you.

  • Grace and Ashton,

Steve here, from undergrad with Grace.

I cannot imagine how painful and disorienting this past year has been for you both. I wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you both. I am deeply moved by your story, the resilience and love you have demonstrated, as well as your bravery for sharing. I lend you all my support and will keep you in my prayers.

Grace: you deserve all the best. I’ll never forget how inspiring of a classmate you were in the trenches of the pre-medical years. I looked up to you as a mentor and role model. You were an example for how to pursue mighty goals without compromising your devotion to your friends and family. You would have been an exemplary physician. Rest in peace knowing that those of us remaining will aspire to embody your grace and strength.

    Much love,

  • Grace,

I don’t know where to begin. I just found out what you had been going through and that you’re with Christ. While I am shocked by the news and the timeline of everything, what’s more intense is the love I see emanating from your life and memory. We lost touch, but all my memories of you are positive and bright. You lit up the room and you were such a loving soul that blessed my life and countless others. It was a blessing to have shared moments and laughs with you. It was a blessing to hear about your life journey. And albeit heart-breaking, it is a blessing to read and hear about your strength and courage through the most difficult time in you and your family’s lives. My heart feels grateful that you met a God loving man like Ashton.

To Ashton: my heart goes out to you brother, thank you for loving such a wonderful person with such strength, courage, selflessness and love. In my brief life I have not heard of a man demonstrating the Gospel and a husband’s love with such devotion. Thank you.

Grace, you are an example of what it means to be blessing. My heart breaks for your family and close friends. While hard to hold on to sometimes, there is peace knowing that you are at perfect peace with our Father. I’m so happy to have had to opportunity to get to know you. I’m honored and it brings a smile to my face every time I think back on our friendship. You are a true blessing.

  • Grace was an extraordinary mentor and someone I really admired during my time at USC. I was shocked and devastated to find out that she had passed.. I am so sorry. Rest in peace, Grace.
